Poll Results: Hardest Enemy!

The poll for this month was which enemy you thought was the hardest. The results have just been counted and we had a total of 14 votes (better than last month at least). The hardest enemy voted by you was...

Butterscorch!

Here are the other poll totals:

Butterscorch----10 votes (71%)
Roo Morgg-----2 votes (14%)
4 Riders--------2 votes (14%)
Kuckal---------0 votes (0%)

So as you can see, Butterscorch won by a landslide! Thank you all for voting!

Next month's poll will be "what kind of world should be made next?"

May is all about Factions!

In this month of May, Lego Universe will be focusing on the factions! The contest calendar has been posted, and there are some exciting things planned for this month. There is going to be a wide variety of contests, but they will all be related to your faction! Here is the official contest calendar for this month!

May 3 – until Nexus Tower is done!   Jawbox Brick Donation
All Factions need to participate in the monthly challenge for us to reach the goal of finishing Nexus Tower. It will be the biggest and boldest Minifigure mission seen in LEGO Universe to date! Start collecting bricks today, so you’re ready to make some hefty donations in the Nexus Jawbox! This community mission will kick off with the ‘Build Nexus Tower’ release and end only when Nexus Tower is completed! The 20 top donators win large buckets of LEGO bricks.

May 7 – May 8   Mystery Racetrack Grand Prix
You will be pushing the pedal to the metal somewhere in LEGO Universe... The location is still unknown, but stay posted on LEGOuniverse.com/community, we will reveal the location a few days before the Grand Prix begins! For now, rest assured - it is not going to be easy, but it will be fun! All Factions welcome. Don’t push and shove members of your own Faction too much. Spectacular LEGO City Sets will be yours if you win!

May 14 – May 15   Shooting Gallery Showdown
On your mark. Take aim. Fire! Get the highest score during the weekend of May 14 - May 15 – we will give LEGO City Fire Stations and Fire Rescue vehicles to the best marksmen! Remember, hitting a friendly ship subtracts for your score. It is Venture Leaguers out there; we do not want them to sink! Everything with a purple tint you should hit – oh, and red sea monsters!

May 21 – May 22   Best Faction Screenshot
Snap a screenshot of your Best Faction Moment and share it in the Creation Lab. It could be an image of you with fellow Faction members, showing off your Faction skillz, or maybe you could join forces with other Factions and grab a snapshot which shows how heroic you all are? The 20 best submissions will be picked by the LEGO Universe judging panel and win awesome LEGO Hero Factory prizes! Heroes for heroes – it’s only fair!

May 28 – May 29   Faction Unity – Battle together for Nimbus Station!
In the Battle of Nimbus Station (or, as it is know on the streets of LEGO Universe, ‘BoNS’) defeat the 4 Riders of the Maelstrom to be in the drawing for LEGO Ninjago Sets such as the LEGO Ninjago Battle Arena and LEGO Ninjago Skeleton Bowling. Teamwork is key in this challenge – whether it’s within or across Factions!

Nexus Force Members, get ready to join forces or be prepared to beat the other Factions, and above all, remember to have fun! Let the games begin! Go Nexus Force Minifigures, go!

Community Mission: Jawbox Donation Contest!

As you all know, you need to donate LOTS of bricks to complete Nexus Tower. So why not reward the people who donate the most? That's exactly what Lego is doing. The top 20 contributors to the Nexus Jawbox will win REAL bricks! It's almost like trading in your virtual bricks for real ones! And who wouldn't want to do that? So make sure you start stocking up/buying bricks right now! It's going to take a lot to donate a ton of bricks and become one of the winners! Here is your 'mission' according to the community article. And in case you don't get what "stop" means after each sentence, it was an old term to tell the reader that the sentence ended there. It was usually in telegrams or military messages.

Here’s your mission: Start gathering loads of bricks. Stop. After May 3, talk to Nexus Jay in Nimbus Station. Stop. He will send you on to Kurt Tussle at the Race Place. Stop. Tussle stands right next to the magnificent Nexus Jawbox. Stop. You will drop your bricks into its churning abyss of a mouth! Stop. If you are one of the top donators, you will win… real bricks! Full stop.

Here is the full prize list:

--------------------------------------------------

The top contributor to Nexus Tower wins:

The 2-20 top brick contributors will win buckets of bricks:
1 LEGO Large Brick Box (#5508)
1 LEGO Brick Separator (#630)
1 copy of LEGO® Universe Massively Multiplayer Online Game (#55000)
o An in-game item exclusive to this contest: The Hood of the Mystic
o 20 in-game Faction tokens
.
-------------------------------------------------

But make sure that while your donating bricks, to keep your hand away from the jaws, they could bite your hand off!

Interview with LU Model Designer: Hans Burkhard Schlömer

This a Q&A interview with one of the model designers for Lego Universe! He tells about his past and how he makes the models for Lego Universe. Did you know that the Assembly Personal Fortress was made by him? So whenever you use that power-up ingame, you better be sure to thank him for it!

Hans Burkhard Schlömer (aka Burkhard) is living a childhood dream. He builds with LEGO for a living and sees his creations come to life in LEGO Universe! Read more to find out how he began building with LEGO, how he joined the LEGO family, and tips for aspiring builders!
Q: Tell us a little bit about yourself. What is your background?
A: I was working as a music teacher for 8 years and played the Trombone semi-professionally. No, it wasn’t hard for me to leave music, because I can keep making music even if I’m not working as a teacher anymore.

Q: What was the first LEGO set you owned?
A: I don’t remember my first, but my parents let me watch the first moon landing on TV when I was a baby (or so they told me). Later my grandparents bought me this huge, BLUE Moon Landing set! While it wasn’t my first set, it was the biggest so far.

Q: Were you always a skilled builder? When did you start free building?
A: Around 1998 I rediscovered my love for building with LEGO. I got my first PC and internet and found many LEGO fan sites, one in particular had mechs. The web owner built about a dozen models based on a table top game with miniatures. One day he just stopped – that’s when I started building my own. Digitally, so I could create building instructions and render pictures. Until then, I hadn’t done much creative building, and my first build since childhood was – surprise - a mech!

Eventually I also created my own website, to display and share my LEGO creations. Going by the artist name of “Primus”, I managed to make quite a name for myself in the fan community as a builder.

Q: What is it about LEGO that you love?
A: The challenge of building something to certain specifications. There always are limitations to overcome – not the right bricks, colors, shapes, or certain “price tags” to meet. You get to be really creative when building with LEGO. I feel a bit like a sculptor, but I just choose to create things with LEGO instead of, say, clay. It’s much more fun. And less dirty!

Q: Some people think if you turn your hobby into a job, it doesn’t become fun anymore. Do you still have fun?
A: I’m not building that much anymore when at home, true - but that’s because I get all my building needs met at work. The only difference is: now I’m even getting paid for having fun!

Q: How did you go from being a music teacher to a professional LEGO builder for LEGO Universe?

A: For many years I was building models for my website as a hobby, training myself to be a professional LEGO builder – without knowing it! Really, I had no idea this would ever turn into an actual job. I joined the LUP program for LEGO Universe and even became team lead of the best team ever: the BETA BLOCKERS! When the time was right, I simply asked LEGO to be hired. Now I’ve been a model designer for LEGO Universe for just over 3 years.

Q: What exactly do you do as a professional LEGO builder?

A: I create digital models for the game based on artwork, short descriptions, or my own imagination. Sometimes an idea that looks good in a drawing doesn’t work in brick at that scale. Then it’s my job to find a solution that is close to the concept art and works in LEGO.

Q: What is the biggest challenge you face in creating models for LEGO Universe?

A: If all I get to work with is a line of text for a description, things can get tough. “A small turret to protect the player” – would you have thought this would eventually turn into the Personal Fortress for Assembly Engineers? I made a few different concepts, and our art director Phil Atencio chose the one that fit his vision the best. Then I gave the model two more passes until everybody was happy. A tough process, but so worth it!

Q: I understand you built the Mach Lava and Fire Brawl, the two new Dragonmaw Chasm themed Race Cars! Which one is your favorite?

A: The Mach Lava because it’s really got character. From a front angle, the spiky pieces look like eyes and teeth! Chomp!

Q: Do you build with LEGO Digital Designer (LDD) or with real bricks?

A: I prefer to build digitally – it saves SO much time. But while many models in LEGO Universe only exist in digital format, it’s also nice to have real LEGO models that you can put on the table and show around. Physical building for me is the second step after building digitally.

Q: Do you have any advice for the aspiring builders out there?

A: Keep your brick collection sorted and organized! Small parts magazines with drawers come in very handy here. Of course, searching for the right bricks is part of building with LEGO, but you want to spend most of your time actually building, not looking for stuff. Oh, also check out LEGO Digital Designer! LDD is free, and easy to use. It has a lot of useful features but is not complicated at all. You get all the bricks you ever wanted in any color. The bricks even automatically snap together!

Q: Can you show us what you’re working on now? :)

A: Now THAT's the hardest part of this job: sometimes I just cannot tell or show what I'm working on! You have to wait until it is in the game. See you in LEGO Universe!

How to Build the Nexus Jawbox! (Before it comes out!)

The Nexus Jawbox is a special model that can only be in Lego Universe for a short time. It's job is to collect bricks from players so the Nexus Tower construction project can be finished. Once the entire community has donated enough bricks, Nexus Tower will be completed! LEGO has released the instructions for you to build the Nexus Jawbox with (for all of you people who can't wait to see it in-game). Once again, and with all models, you can build it on your property, your living room floor, or in the new updated LDD! Have fun building!

Lego Universe Backgrounds!

Using the magic of Photoshop (and images downloaded from the LU site) I have made a set of multiple resolution backgrounds for you to download! Here is a preview:

If you like it, choose the resolution closest to your computers and click on it. That will take you to box.net for the download. Once you have it downloaded, just right click on it and press "set as desktop background". If the resolutions do not match your computer resolution, you can always play around with the background settings in the control panel to make it fit well enough.

2048 x 1152 (highest resolution)
1920 x 1080
1600 x 900
1280 x 720
800 x 600 (a little bit deformed)

Can't find your resolution? Go to start, control panel, search for resolution, click "adjust screen resolution", and it will tell you your current resolution.

Organized Vendors!

Have you ever had to scroll through ALL of those hundred thousand or so bricks that a vendor sells? I have! Thats why Lego decided to make brick vendors a little more organized. You can now find bricks based on Clips, Hand Accessories Hinge & Turntable, and more! You can also even use your buckets to sort bricks and find them more easily from the vendor. With this update (that is coming soon) you will be able to spend more time building and less time searching. Even though this update is small, it should have a big effect on your building productivity in Lego Universe.

Now for download! Sentinel Patcher Theme!

As promised yesterday, I said that I would get the download available for the Sentinel Patcher Theme. Today I uploaded it onto box.net where you can securely download the file. Installing the files is easy, all you need to do is go to this website and download the file. Once you have it downloaded, read the readme (thats why it says readme in ALL CAPS) and follow the instructions there.

My own Patcher Template!

I think that most of you are aware that there are two patcher templates available for download by LegoFan101. They are Assembly and Avant Gardens themed. I was looking at them and kind of got inspired to make my own! I worked hard for about 1 and 1/2 hours and came up with this:

I'm really proud of it! It still needs a few tweaks and stuff, but this will be my patcher from now on! I am still trying to figure out how to get this as a downloadable file that won't completely destroy your current patcher. :) but once I can get it available for download, I will be sure to post something telling you about it.

Thanks for inspiring me LegoFan101! I hope you aren't too mad that I sort of copied your idea. It was a good one!

File Diving (Find #1)

I am going to start a series of file diving finds that will be posted regulary across the site. While I was file diving, I came across the.xml file of the instant chat. Here is a copy and paste directly from it. It is a note to the designers and programmers. It contains a list of animations that may be added to the game? I'm not sure.

*** READ BEFORE EDITING! ***
Designers:
You may enter the id and chatoutput at your liesure. The list of known animations is:
 backflip
 clap
 cringe
 sad
 proud
 gasp
 giggle
 salute
 shrug
 sigh
 talk
 wave
 frustrated
 thanks
 yes
 zap

Support for icons is in the works.
The plan is to have this whole structure put into the database and loaded upon client login
so we don't have people changing the text to other less desirable stuff.  Nesting will also be
   included.

Programmers:
you shouldn't have to do anything

Upcoming Feature: Stories

Since user stories seem to be getting increasingly popular, I decided to start my own. There will be a new page at the top of the site that will contain each of the new stories that I will write. The first story I am going to write will be quite long (maybe 10 chapters) and will take a long time to finish. The chapters will be published upon their completion so there is not such a long wait. Just to get you ready, here is the prologue to the first story.

"The battle of Crux Prime was long and hard. Every minifigure had to fight for their lives against the continuous onslaught of Maelstrom. The factions faced the new threat of evolved enemies, featuring twice as much health and damage. There was no question that the Maelstrom invasion was getting more and more serious as time went on. The minifigures won the battle and competed Nexus Tower. It was a happy ending. But did you think about what would have happened if Crux Prime had been lost...?"

Lego Universe Battle Landscape

This is another Photoshop edited picture that I made, it has the four faction leaders being chased out by the maelstrom as it invades the city of... I don't know what the place in the background is. Hope you like it!

How to Build the Fire Brawl! (and build like LU programmers!)

There is another instructional release on how to build an upcoming in-game set in your property, LDD, or at home! It teaches you how to build the Fire Brawler, one of the new race cars coming to Lego Universe. There is also some great news with LDD! Version 4.1 is now ready for you to download! I don't know what the new version is like (since I tend not to use LDD, and I haven't downloaded v4.1 yet). However, the one main new feature is this: "This means that you now have access to the LEGO Universe palette of bricks, which is used every day by our own Builders!". Apparently with the new version you can use the same colors that actual Lego Universe programmers use. Pretty exciting! You can download v4.1 of LDD here:

 v4.1 LDD

Have fun with it!

I also have a link to the .pdf instructions on how to build the Fire Brawl. Click here for it!

REAL Photoshop edits! (As promised)

What the developers on the Maelstrom side of the battle posted for Nexus Tower.

Hello Everyone!

I'm not sure if you remember the older post of pictures that I "Photoshopped" using Microsoft Word, but I promised that there would be more coming. However, the new edited photos I am making are actually products of the REAL Photoshop. I bought Adobe's Creative Suite 5 (with the student discount, NO WAY I could afford it without the student discount!). The above picture was my first Lego Universe picture I made, and I think it turned out pretty good! You can see some minor mistakes in it, but oh well. Be prepared for more! Coming soon!

Also in line to be added to the site:

1. Flash content with Adobe Flash Catalyst
2. Animation
3. My very own template made using Adobe Dreamweaver.

New Clan...New Forum

Sorry for the lack of updates this weekend, but it was for a good cause! I was busy making a forum for a new clan I am starting. The name of the clan is Eternal Nexus. Eternal Nexus is committed to fighting the maelstrom wherever it may be! The clan is incredibly open, allowing all players to add rules, change dates and times, change the ranking system, and start their own group. It is a fantastic forum, and now all I need are people to start posting on it! Join the forum here, it doesn't take long and you will able to have a say in what happens in the clan. Plus, the first person to join gets an automatic rank up to "Eternal Nexus First Recruit" the third highest rank in the chain! This rank is second only to moderator and administrator. Can't wait to see you there!

Welcome to Paradise-Nimbus Isle!

So, you thought Avant Grove was pretty big, huh? You haven't seen a big property until you've seen Nimbus Isle. Nimbus Isle is supposed to be even larger than Avant Grove, and have many more building oppurtunities plus a great view of a calming ocean. What more could you ask for? I know, I know, there's still a lot of stuff you could ask for in a property. But for now, this is the best you can get. Read this letter from the community staff to all of the 'adventurers' in Lego Universe. And most importantly, have fun building at Nimbus Isle! I know I will!

-Zorkonian12

Adventurers,

The Property Guards need your help!

A new, uncharted island was just spotted near Nimbus Station by Property Guard Bud Nippit! Since he discovered the island, he has earned the honor of naming this new area – and he chose Nimbus Isle! Quite fitting, isn’t it?

Nimbus Isle is a larger-sized Property than Nimbus Rock – some might say it is comparable to the size of Avant Grove! Brave Bud Nippit insisted on being the first to explore Nimbus Isle, to make sure it is a fitting habitat for Minifigures. We’ve just received a report from him that Nimbus Isle is swarming with Stromling Mechs, Stromling Admirals and Dark Ronin. Apparently, they are trying to build a monument to the Darkitect out of some rubble, but luckily for us, they are really lousy at building and just watch rocks roll off each other.

Bud Nippit reports further that although Nimbus Isle is filled with the Maelstrom, he sees potential for great beauty and peace on Nimbus Isle. Nimbus Isle has a premium oceanic view –which he assures us will be sure to inspire builders and visitors alike!

Meanwhile, Property Guards stationed in Nimbus Station are working tirelessly to build a Rocket Launch Pad to Nimbus Isle. As soon as this Launch Pad is ready, please, won’t you help Bud Nippit who is bravely facing the Maelstrom alone? We’re told that the new Launch Pad will be found in Brick Annex, on the path towards Pet Cove’s launcher.

While you wait for the finishing touches to the Launch Pad, discuss this article and your new Property ideas on the message boards!

Can You Handle Dragonmaw Chasm?

As promised by the developers, Dragonmaw Chasm Raceway will be opening to the public sometime around this week. An official date has not been said, however the news on it was posted on the Community site, so you know it will be coming very soon. The race track in Forbidden Valley will be THE toughest race track in the Lego Universe, and you will need lots of skill to race on it and win. It takes you through glowing dragon eggs, where you have to dodge the mother's fireballs, then up and around the great tree on a steep and winding track, across wooden tracks, down into canyons, and around the refinery. The track is like a highly dangerous, life threatening, adrenaline pumping, scenic tour through Forbidden Valley. Whoever thought of combining a scenic tour and life threatening roads was genius. :)

Official Valiant Weapons!

Some of you may remember the post on "Ultimate Lego Universe Weapons!" where I gave you the link and the club code to see concept art for the two-handed weapons. I was recently told by a friend (his username is smashed, look for him on LU) that some official information has been extracted from the game files and posted on Lego Universe Wiki. All of the information that I am about to share was taken from the Lego Universe Wiki site. You can also expect some new faction kits that are going to be really awesome, although not much information has been released on them. The Startling Secrets behind Bob's Past

Bob's a helpful guy right? He's the guy who gave you imagination and tells you good job whenever your double jumping across a bridge, or moving the camera around the to get a good view of the waterfall. Apparently he is not so helpful as he seems...

Bob's secrets have been unveiled. Many stories have been made about what Bob now does after he helped the minifigures out of the Venture Explorer. Don't be fooled by his always smiling face. Behind that smile is the evil of the Darkitect! Recent intelligence reports prove that Bob has another, less helpful, life behind the scenes. Bob went to the Venture Explorer to try and follow Sky Lane around. He had... er... special feelings. But when Sky Lane couldnt keep her eyes off of Epsilon Starcracker, Bob fell into despair. He was offered a job by the seduction of the evil Darkitect and he took it in order to make vengeance on Sky Lane. Bob, in return, gained immortality. This explains why he was able to stay on board on the Venture Explorer and help other minifigures escape (and also flag them down by taking his arm off). The most startling secret is, he has implanted a tracking device on every single minifigure he has helped! This means he is watching you... every single step you take... even right now... O_O

Want to uncover the full secrets of Bob's past? Click here.
